I’m a simple man…
I was looking forward to the end of the Pumpkin Beer Run (PBR) for two
reasons:
1 - As you can see from my ratings, I haven’t really enjoyed any of the
last 5 pumpkin beers, and
2 - I planned on ending the PBR with the Sixpoint Autumnation, which
others have described as a good beer, without much pumpkin taste at all. The Autumnation is a wet hopped ale, brewed
with just a touch of pumpkin, ginger and spices.
As I look back at the October calendar, it appears I did a mini Sixpoint
Beer Run this month, with their Mad Scientist brew, Crisp Lager, and now the
Autumnation. Sixpoint is new to the DC
area, so I guess I was overtaken by the novelty of it. But based on the three beers I’ve had, I’ve
got to say that these are not beers for everybody. Sixpoint beers have a very bold style, with high
hop bitterness and unique tastes. I’ll
compare them to Dogfish Head brews, in that they seem to want to create unique
tastes to appeal to beer enthusiasts.
The Autumnation is a pretty complex beer – there’s a lot going on
here. There’s the fresh, but very
bitter, taste from the wet hopping.
There’s a little pumpkin and spice.
There’s some strange citrus-y taste.
I almost gave it a NG – I didn’t really enjoy it, but I can appreciate
the style and character of the beer (that sounded snobby), so I’ll stay
consistent and rate it a P for Passable Pumpkin. Glad that Beer Run’s over!
