Happy Mardi Gras everyone!  I hope you didn’t give up beer for Lent.  If you did, I guess you can live vicariously through me for the next 40 days.

In honor of Mardi Gras, I’m drinking a beer from Louisiana.  Actually, there’s not a whole lot of breweries in Lousiana.  Dixie Brewery, which used to be located in downtown New Orleans, was flooded out by Hurricance Katrina and then most of the equipment was looted.  Dixie is currently being contracted brewed in Wisconsin.

The Abita Jockamo Abita was actually much like last night’s Long Hammer IPA – it was a little more red in color, but the taste was very similar – a mild, crisp, tasty IPA.

So what’s a Jockamo?  The reference here is from the song “Iko Iko”, a Mardi Gras classic.  This song is sort of the Cajun “Louie Louie” – there are many different versions of the meaning of the song.  According to New Orleans musician Doctor John, “Jockamo” means Jester.  James "Sugar Boy" Crawford says “Jockamo” was chant called by Indians before they went into battle.

Regardless of the meaning, click the picture below to hear a live Dr. John version of Iko Iko (the volume is real low, so crank it up).
