In 2006 a couple friends and I started what would become a quasi-annual beer vacation, visiting breweries, beer bars and brewpubs in our chosen destination.  Our first trip was to New England, where we visited…

  • Union Oyster House
  • Boston Beer Works
  • Harpoon Brewing Co.
  • Smuttynose Brewing Co.
  • Red Hook Brewing Co.
  • Portsmouth Brewery
  • Long Trail Brewing Co.
  • Otter Creek Brewing Co.
  • Magic Hat Brewing Co.
  • Vermont Pub & Brewery
…all between Thursday at 6PM and Saturday at midnight.  And I'm sure I missed a place or two.  I've been told going on vacation with me is no vacation.

About halfway down that list is Long Trail Brewing Company in Bridgewater Corners, Vermont.  If you’re a skier, it’s near the Killington ski resort.  The Long Trail brewpub is one of the coolest I’ve visited.  The brewery and the pub are in a valley, and the brewpub has an outdoor deck that sits right next to a creek.  The interior has a lodge feel about it - it was pretty crowded on a cold November Saturday afternoon and the appetizers were good. A sampler of their beers was served in a six-pack muffin pan.

Long Trail Ale is their flagship beer, and is brewed in the German Altbier style.  It pours a nice copper color, has a medium head.  The taste is very smooth, not too hoppy, very tasty.  Or maybe it just tasted better to me after yesterday’s Cass “Sound of Vitality.”

  1. Great that we can now get Long Trail beers in Va! I remember it snowing while we were there and they had a roaring fire in the big stone fireplace - cozy!

  2. One more thing - if you like Fat Tire Amber Ale, you'll most likely like Long Trail Ale. And now, as Henry said, you can get Long Trail in Virginia, at Total Beverage and I've seen it the grocery store.

But watch which six pack you're grabbing - a few of their labels look very similar. The other beers are good too, but if you want the "Ale", double check the label.

  3. I actually picked up a six pack of this at Total Beverage this past weekend. I have to agree with your rating - I would absolutely buy this again. Keep up the good 'work'! Just imagine if you got paid for this type of research......
