Snake Dog.  Flying Dog.  Double Dog.

Flying Dog Brewing Company in Frederick MD makes a lot of good beers and one bad one (at least in my opinion).  Take my advice – stay away from the Raging Bitch - Belgian Style IPA, that is.  To be fair, I should give it another try, but my first glass of it was extremely bitter – which would make sense for a Raging Bitch.

On the good beer list is the Snake Dog IPA.  This is a slightly bitter, a little citrus-y IPA that went quite well with Kung Pao Chicken.

Flying Dog’s website also links to a sister website called beerdinners.com, where they promote restaurants across the country offering four to eight course dinners, each course paired with a different Flying Dog beer.  They also give you suggestions on how to host your own beer dinner.

You’ve probably seen flying dog’s beers in the store, with some crazy graphics on the labels.  The labels were not just inspired by Ralph Steadman, who created the crazy art for Hunter S. Thompson’s Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas and other works, he actually creates the artwork.  George Stranahan, the founder of Flying Dog, is / was actually friends with both Steadman and Thompson, and definitely has some gonzo adventures of his own, just a bit of which is listed in his bio.

  1. Although I am familiar with Flying Dog beers, I didn't know of the connection to Stranahan's Colorado Whiskey until clicking the link you posted. Nice little bit of bonus info!
