My friends Chris and Jim hooked me up with a Hoss Rye Lager from Great Divide. Their Colette Farmhouse Ale I had earlier this month was quite good, so I was looking to this one.
You wouldn’t know it from the name, but the Hoss Rye Lager is actually a Marzen or Oktoberfest style beer. It is a very deep amber color, with a very thin head. The initial taste is very sweet – a little too sweet, actually. The sweetness continued throughout the beer, with a little bit of maltiness. I could not make out any distinct taste from the rye.
All in all, it was OK, but I would probably pass on buying this one at the store.
